Haus Erholung, Event venue in Mönchengladbach, Germany

Haus Erholung is a four-story classical building on Abteiberg featuring round-arched windows and a columned entrance facade. The spaces inside now function as a modern event venue with contemporary technology, dining services, and professional staff for meetings and celebrations.

Haus Erholung was built in 1861 for the Gesellschaft Erholung, a society of merchants and entrepreneurs founded in 1801; the original rectangular brick building gained a transverse wing in 1876. British bombs partly destroyed it on 31 January 1943, and only partial repairs followed until 1969. Restoration under the Landeskonservatoramt ran from 1979 to 1981, when the unsalvageable north wing was demolished. The society sold the house to the city in 1983, which listed it in 1984.

The name comes from the Gesellschaft Erholung, a society of merchants and entrepreneurs founded in 1801 that commissioned the building in 1861. After the First World War the society placed two memorial plaques inside listing 62 members who died in the war. Since the 1979–1981 restoration the house has hosted festivities and events of various kinds.

Haus Erholung stands at Johann-Peter-Boelling-Platz on the Abteiberg, a short walk uphill from Gladbach's centre, near the Museum Abteiberg and Hans-Jonas-Park. The grounds slope down to the east; a retaining wall and a stair at the eastern boundary lead into the public park, and from there the view reaches across the roofs of Mönchengladbach. The building is used for events, so check what is open before setting out.

The garden behind the building is a remnant of about 30 metres in length, with a central medallion-shaped lawn and a pond. From its eastern edge, where a retaining wall and steps lead into the public park, there is a wide view over the roofs of Mönchengladbach.
