Heisterberger Weiher

Heisterberger Weiher, lake in Germany

Heisterberger Weiher is a man-made reservoir in the Westerwald region, situated on a high plateau at about 530 meters elevation. The water covers roughly 10 hectares and is surrounded by forested hills, open grassland, and simple walking paths that offer visitors multiple ways to explore the area.

The reservoir was constructed between 1707 and 1711 when a local ruler had a dam built to store water and breed fish. This body of water has shaped the landscape for over 300 years and continues to serve as a storage reservoir and recreation site for the region.

The lake takes its name from the nearby village of Heisterberg, reflecting the area's connection between settlement and water. Visitors use the space for relaxed activities like walking, picnicking, and swimming, showing how the lake is woven into the fabric of local life.

The site is easily accessible by car via Federal Road 255 and offers ample parking plus a year-round campground with over 400 pitches. The lake features designated swimming areas with wide lawns, hiking trails, boat rentals, and dining options, though visitors swim at their own risk as there is no lifeguard on duty.

Each August, the festival 'Heisterberger Weiher in Flammen' takes place, where the lake is illuminated at night by a spectacular fireworks display. This yearly event draws many visitors who come to watch the water light up in colorful reflections.
