Sankt-Gertrauden-Kirche, Protestant church in Salbke, Magdeburg, Germany
Sankt-Gertrauden-Kirche is a church building in Magdeburg's Salbke district featuring a slate-covered roof and flat buttresses designed according to architect Friedrich August Stüler's plans. The structure includes an apse and was rebuilt after historical destruction.
The original church was consecrated on March 17, 1018, by Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg, making it one of the city's oldest structures. Over the centuries, the building suffered multiple destructions from wars and conflicts but was rebuilt each time.
The stained glass windows created in the late 1920s and early 1930s display biblical scenes such as the nativity and crucifixion throughout the interior. These artworks give the sacred space its spiritual character and visual focus.
The church is located at Schönebecker Straße 117 and remains open to visitors throughout the year. Regular Protestant services are held here, and the grounds include a cemetery with historical gravestones to explore.
A lapidarium was established on the church grounds in 2011, collecting historical gravestones and monumental pieces from the region. This collection preserves traces of Magdeburg's past in one accessible location.
