Friedelhausen Castle

Friedelhausen Castle is a structure with four distinctive towers built in 1852 for the English wife of a German baron and based on English architectural principles. The building sits within the hilly landscape of the Hesse region and combines Gothic details with classical château forms.

Baron Adalbert von Nordeck zur Rabenau had the castle built in 1852 as a residential residence for his English wife Clara. This 19th-century founding was a response to the desire for an estate that blends English and German building traditions.

The poet Rainer Maria Rilke spent summer 1905 here as a guest of the Countess of Schwerin. His stay within the castle's rooms left a mark on the region's literary history.

The castle is in private ownership and therefore not open to visitors, though you can view the exterior from nearby paths. The surrounding hiking trails in the Lahn Valley region offer good chances to see the architectural outline from different angles.

The castle displays a rare mix of English Gothic elements with German château traditions, an unusual combination rarely found elsewhere in the region. This architectural duality mirrors the personal story of its founders and creates a visually distinctive feature.
