Heeresbäckerei Berlin, Military bakery and cultural heritage site in Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany.
Heeresbäckerei is a former military bakery in Friedrichshain with a striking yellow clinker brick facade and large arched windows that let light into the industrial building. The complex originally housed a bakery, grain storage, administrative offices, and residences for staff and remains a key part of Berlin's military and industrial heritage.
Founded in 1805 as part of the Royal Prussian Commissariat, it served the military supply system from its earliest days. After a fire in 1890, architects Kneister, Arenberg, and Böhm rebuilt it and gave it the distinctive brick facade it has today.
The name reflects its original purpose as a military bakery, and its brick facade still marks the character of Köpenicker Straße today. Inside, you can still see handcrafted details like the copper beech flooring and cast-iron structures that tell the story of its working past.
The site sits near the river Spree and is easy to reach, with its yellow brick front making it simple to spot on Köpenicker Straße. Today it functions as a venue and restaurant, so visitors can admire it from outside or step inside to dine and explore.
During the Cold War, it stored army provisions like Zwieback hardtack, military bread, and canned goods for the city's population, showing its importance went beyond purely military purposes. This dual role as both military and civilian supply point made it a key player in Berlin's infrastructure.
