Hellmuth Ulrici Clinic, Medical facility and sanatorium in Kremmen, Germany.
The Hellmuth Ulrici Clinic is a medical facility and sanatorium in Kremmen, designed by architect Richard Ermisch on a landscaped site near a lake. The complex consists of several separate buildings, including a chapel and support structures, arranged across a park-like setting.
The site opened in 1913 under the name Waldhaus Charlottenburg and served from the start as a sanatorium for people with lung conditions. Following German reunification, it was converted into a specialized orthopedic clinic.
The buildings follow the style of an Alpine country house, which gives the complex a look rarely seen in a medical setting. This architectural choice was enough to earn the site a heritage protection status in 1995.
The site is easy to walk through on foot, as the separate buildings are well spaced and visible across the grounds. A visit works best in dry weather, since much of the movement between areas happens outdoors.
The original name, Waldhaus Charlottenburg, was borrowed from the Berlin palace of Charlottenburg, an unusual choice for a clinic outside the city. This connection to Berlin suggested the facility was aimed at attracting patients from the capital.
