Schloss Sommerswalde

Schloss Sommerswalde is a castle complex in Oberkrämer featuring a neo-gothic residential building, an orangery, a former forester's house, and stables spread across expansive grounds. The different structures together form a diverse ensemble distributed throughout the property.

The entrepreneur Friedrich August Richard Sommer commissioned architects Hans Abesser and Jürgen Kröger to build the castle between 1888 and 1891. The construction took place during a period of major industrial and urban transformation in Germany.

The stables display architectural references to Berlin's Red City Hall, while the main house echoes elements from the Reichstag. These design choices connect the property to important urban structures beyond its rural setting.

The Forsthaus restaurant operates Thursday through Sunday, offering dining in a garden with outdoor spaces. The large grounds make it easy to walk around and explore the different buildings.

The property transformed into a Buddhist meditation center in 2008 and now serves as a space for Buddhist study and retreat programs. This conversion merges the historic architecture with contemporary spiritual practices.
