Historisches Rathaus

The Historisches Rathaus is a Renaissance building featuring a distinctive double outdoor staircase sheltered by a canopy supported by Tuscan columns. The facade displays elaborate decorative elements and today serves as the administrative center and home to the Wine Culture Museum.

Construction began in 1532 on the foundation of an earlier Romanesque market building, making it a central landmark for centuries. Extensive rebuilding took place in the early 18th century after fire damage, resulting in the structure seen today.

The council chamber displays heraldic stained glass windows from former noble families and a portrait of the king who granted city rights to the town. These artworks tell the story of how local leaders remained connected to regional powers across many generations.

The building serves as the local government center and houses the Wine Culture Museum, accessible during regular visiting hours. Check opening times in advance as they may vary seasonally or due to local events and administrative activities.

Every Pentecost Tuesday, the town hall square becomes the setting for a traditional goat auction that has been held for centuries. This unusual event brings together agricultural trading with the formal civic space in a remarkable way.
