St. Oswald, Catholic parish church in Marktl, Bavaria, Germany

St. Oswald is the Catholic parish church of Marktl in Upper Bavaria. Its white square tower rises into an octagonal belfry with narrow arched openings, topped by a steep dark spire with a cross. The broad roof is covered in reddish-brown tiles, and the plain white walls have small windows and lower attached structures.

A first church, consecrated in 1297, was Gothic; after a town fire it was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1702. Growth of the parish led to a complete neo-Gothic rebuild in 1854–57, oriented with the choir to the southwest. In 1964 a wider new nave was added to the northwest, its altar wall joining the old tower, and the former choir became a side chapel.

St. Oswald is the Catholic parish church of Marktl and the baptismal church of Pope Benedict XVI. Joseph Alois Ratzinger was baptized here on Holy Saturday, 16 April 1927, a few hours after his birth. The octagonal font of Danube limestone, carved by Anselm Sickinger with winged angel heads at the corners of the basin, was returned to the historic choir in 2006 and used again for a baptism on Easter Sunday, 16 April 2006.

The church stands on Obere Kirchgasse in Marktl, with the tower facing the street and the main entrance below the belfry. The interior is entered through the 1964 nave, while the neo-Gothic high altar and the baptismal font are in the old choir, now a side chapel. Access may be limited during services.

The baptismal font where Joseph Alois Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, was baptized on Holy Saturday, 16 April 1927, was removed in 1964 and placed in the parish garden. Members of the Heimatbund rescued it, displayed it in the local museum from 1992, and after his election it was restored and returned to the church's historic choir, where a baptism was celebrated again on Easter Sunday, 16 April 2006.
