Schloss Frankenhausen is a Renaissance building with a square floor plan that rests on a high fieldstone foundation without decorative elements. The structure houses the regional museum and contains several exhibition spaces on its levels.
The structure originated in the medieval period but suffered severe damage during the Peasants' War in the 16th century. Following this destruction, it was comprehensively rebuilt between 1533 and 1536 in Renaissance style.
