Schloss Frankenhausen

Schloss Frankenhausen is a Renaissance building with a square floor plan that rests on a high fieldstone foundation without decorative elements. The structure houses the regional museum and contains several exhibition spaces on its levels.

The structure originated in the medieval period but suffered severe damage during the Peasants' War in the 16th century. Following this destruction, it was comprehensively rebuilt between 1533 and 1536 in Renaissance style.

The castle functions as a regional museum and displays exhibitions about the history of the Kyffhäuser area. Visitors can explore artifacts and documents that show how people lived and what happened in this region.

The castle grounds are accessible throughout the year, and visitors can explore the site freely. The museum inside offers rotating exhibitions and operates a café where you can take a break.

The east façade is the only side of the building that retained its original Renaissance appearance after the great city fire of 1689. This contrast shows how the different sides of the castle were affected differently by those events.
