Herrenhaus Schönfeld, Manor house in Mühlen Eichsen, Germany.
Herrenhaus Schönfeld is a manor house in Mühlen Eichsen with classicist architecture designed by Joseph Christian Lillie in 1822. The main building now contains rental apartments, while the former smithy on the grounds serves as a venue for events.
The estate was first recorded in 1194 as Sconenuelde in a tax register of the Ratzeburg Bishops. Johann Jakob von Leers purchased it in 1807 and later had it redesigned in the classicist style.
The manor served as the center of an estate where the noble family and their workers lived together in a structured hierarchy. Visitors can still observe this social organization through the relationship between the grand residence and the surrounding service buildings.
The estate is located in a rural area and is best reached by car, as public transportation is limited. Visitors should call ahead to arrange access to the grounds or to check for events.
After World War II, the property served as a refugee shelter, kindergarten, school, and even a holiday home for a Berlin company. This changing use reflects the complex history of Germany during the 20th century.
