Muschelminna, Historic fountain at Postplatz, Görlitz, Germany
Muschelminna is a historic fountain at Postplatz in Görlitz, centered on a bronze female figure holding a shell aloft above her head. The pedestal below is made of stone and features four marble figures positioned at each corner around the base.
The original bronze monument was erected in 1887, but the figure was melted down in 1942 during World War II to make weapons. A new cast replica was reinstalled at the site in 1994.
The four marble figures at the base corners each represent different human qualities: hunters with their tools, graceful nymphs, fishermen with their catch, and mermaids. These carved forms show how people in the past understood and valued different ways of living and working.
The fountain sits on Postplatz and is easy to reach on foot from the old town center. The area is well served by public transportation and parking is available nearby.
The name Muschelminna came about over time as local residents called the bronze figure by this name, since Minna was a common shortened form of the name Wilhelmine. This affectionate local name has stuck with the fountain ever since.
