Schlosseiche bei Eisolzried

Schlosseiche bei Eisolzried, Ancient oak tree in Eisolzried, Germany

The Schlosseiche is an ancient oak tree standing in a meadow near a barn at the edge of Eisolzried village. It grows in nutrient-poor glacial gravel soil and dominates the landscape with its wide crown and thick trunk.

The oak was part of the park surrounding Eisolzried Castle, which was completely demolished in the early 1800s. It remains as the sole survivor of what was once an important estate in the region.

The tree served as a landmark for travelers navigating the village crossroads in the early 1900s. It held significance as a natural reference point that helped people find their way through the area.

The tree sits openly in the countryside and is easy to reach on foot from the village. It is best viewed from different angles to fully appreciate its size and distinctive form.

The hollow trunk survived an arson attack in 2003 when someone poured gasoline inside, yet the tree proved resilient enough to endure the damage. A broad lightning scar runs down the trunk, evidence of another trial the tree has weathered over the centuries.
