Schlosseiche bei Eisolzried, Ancient oak tree in Eisolzried, Germany
The Schlosseiche oak stands on a meadow near a barn at the edge of Eisolzried, with its roots in nutrient-poor glacial gravel soil.
The oak belonged to the park of Eisolzried Castle, which was completely demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, leaving this tree as the last remnant.
In 1905, photographer Friedrich Stützer documented the oak as a natural landmark that served as a reference point for travelers at the village crossroads.
The tree measures 23 meters in height, has a crown diameter of 18 meters, and its trunk circumference has increased from 8 meters in 1900 to 9.60 meters in 2017.
The hollow trunk of this 500-year-old oak survived a fire in 2003 when unknown individuals poured gasoline inside it, and displays a 40-centimeter-wide lightning groove.
