Kleinkastell „Am Eichkopf“, Roman fortification site in Langenhain-Ziegenberg, Germany

Kleinkastell Am Eichkopf is a Roman fortification in Langenhain-Ziegenberg whose remains sit on the northern slope of Eichkopf hill. The two sections of the site are separated by an abandoned quarry that operated in earlier times.

The fortification was built during the Roman era as part of the empire's border defense system. Excavations by the Imperial Limes Commission between 1896 and 1897 uncovered trenches of varying depths across both sections of the site.

This fortification was part of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, an ancient border defense line now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can understand on-site how the Romans systematically secured their frontier territories.

The site sits at about 1000 feet (305 meters) elevation and is accessed from the Langenhain-Ziegenberg area with moderate slopes on the northern sections. Proper footwear for uneven ground is recommended, and archaeological work requires official permission in advance.

About 50 meters south of the site stands a World War II bunker that was connected to the former Fuhrer headquarters known as Adlerhorst. This later fortification shows how the strategically important area was used for military purposes across centuries.
