The foundation was established in 1893 and initially operated Germany's first specialized orthopedic hospital. The current building was constructed in 1903 with modern technical features and was later converted to serve the university.
The building takes its name from a charitable foundation and displays an uncommon architectural style with a beaver tail roof design rarely seen in northern Germany. Visitors notice this distinctive roof shape immediately when walking across the university campus.
The building sits centrally on the university campus and is easy to reach on foot from downtown or nearby bus stops. The entrances are clearly marked and the structure includes modern elevators and staircases for moving between floors.
