Hügelgräberfeld Schweinert, Bronze Age burial ground in Elbe-Elster District, Germany
The Hügelgräberfeld Schweinert is a burial ground containing over 650 visible mounds spread across 30 hectares of protected natural land near Herzberg/Elster. The mounds vary in size, with some in the western area reaching up to 40 meters in diameter and five meters in height.
The site dates to the Bronze Age and shows evidence of at least two different cultural phases of settlement. Scientific excavations in the 1930s uncovered pottery, bronze ornaments, and other objects that document the lives of early peoples.
The burial mounds tell the story of people who lived here thousands of years ago and buried their dead with considerable effort. Today you can still see how the mounds are arranged in two groups, showing that different generations used this same place for their burials.
A marked educational trail with information panels guides visitors through the site, explaining the mounds and their significance. The path is accessible for walkers and offers an opportunity to explore the landscape while learning about the archaeological discoveries.
Excavations uncovered objects from two culturally distinct time periods, showing the site was used for burials across several centuries. This mixing of different eras in one location is what makes it particularly valuable to archaeologists.
