Sprosselbrunnen bei Schönberg, Natural spring in Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany
Sprosselbrunnen is a natural spring near Schönberg where water emerges from several openings in a layer of Rhät-Lias sandstone. The water forms a visible stream that flows across the landscape for about five meters.
The spring formed over thousands of years as water eroded the transition layers of Rhaetian sandstone. This slow erosion process shaped the small gorge visible today.
The name Sprosselbrunnen comes from the Franconian word spratzeln, which describes the sound water makes as it emerges from the rock. You can hear this characteristic sound when you stand at the spring today.
You can reach the spring using marked hiking trails that start from Haimendorf or Schönberg and follow the green ring trail system. The route is well marked and easy to follow for most visitors.
Water discharges through multiple tube-like openings in the rock at a rate of several liters per second. Some higher outlets have dried up over time due to ongoing erosion.
