Klingender Wasserfall, Natural waterfall in Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany
Klingender Waterfall is a cascade in the Hüttenbach Gorge near Lauf an der Pegnitz that flows over sandstone steps in several stages. The water drops approximately 15 meters total, moving across a gorge about 5 meters wide and revealing the layers of rock that form the surrounding landscape.
The Hüttenbach Gorge developed through thousands of years of erosion as the stream carved through Rhaetian-Liassic sandstone, creating the rock steps visible today. This geological process demonstrates how water gradually shapes and transforms landscapes over extended periods.
The name 'Klingender Waterfall' comes from the musical tones produced by water and wind in winter as it cascades over the rock steps. These sounds become especially pronounced when ice partially covers the surface.
The site is accessible via marked hiking trails starting from nearby Haimendorf or Schönberg, following the green ring trail system. Walking is the best way to explore the gorge fully and enjoy views from different angles along the route.
During harsh winters, an ice curtain forms in front of the waterfall while water continues flowing behind it, creating melodic sounds. This rare natural display occurs only under specific weather conditions.
