St. Joseph, Catholic parish church in Greifswald, Germany
St. Joseph is a Catholic parish church made of brick in Greifswald built in Gothic Revival style. The prominent west tower with four stories and a spire defines its appearance, while the interior houses a 1986 organ with 17 stops spread across two manuals and a pedalboard.
Construction began in 1869 through the efforts of Catholic students from Westphalia, Rhineland, and Silesia, with the opening taking place in 1871. The building survived the turbulent 20th century largely intact, witnessing major changes in the region around it.
The church displays expressionist artistic works from the 1930s that remain visible in its furnishings today. These creative pieces shape the interior and tell the story of the artistic vision from that era.
The church sits at Bahnhofstrasse 15 and is easily reached on foot from the city center. Visitors can take their time exploring the interior details and should dress for variable weather typical of northern German regions.
From 1929 to 1943, Priest Alfons Maria Wachsmann served here and actively resisted National Socialism during its grip on Germany. His courageous stand during the darkest period of German history is still honored through his grave of honor within the church grounds.
