Jagdschloss Hohe Sonne, Heritage hunting lodge in Eisenach, Germany
Jagdschloss Hohe Sonne is a hunting lodge in Eisenach positioned at about 434 meters elevation in a heavily forested setting. The structure sits within woodland surrounded by ancient trade routes that historically connected the Eisenach region.
Construction took place between 1741 and 1746 under Duke Ernst August I, with architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne designing the structure and Johann Michel executing its decorative elements. The lodge emerged as a showcase of 18th-century princely hunting culture.
The Hohe Sonne lodge became a meeting point for the Friday Society of Eisenach notables during the early 19th century.
The building has been closed since 1985 due to structural damage and is not open to visitors. The surrounding forest area remains accessible through hiking trails that allow exploration of the woodland landscape around the site.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the area in 1777 and expressed admiration for the natural landscape surrounding the site. His visit recorded a moment when the wooded region was already recognized for its scenic value.
