Jagdschloss Hohengehren, Former hunting lodge in Esslingen, Germany
Jagdschloss Hohengehren is a former hunting lodge set within an expansive wildlife park near Esslingen. The compound included kennels for dogs on the southwestern side and ornamental gardens laid out to the northeast.
The structure originated as a hunting residence for the Wurttemberg nobility and anchored a sprawling wildlife park. When the park was dissolved in 1839, the Altbach municipality relocated the building to the town and made it the seat of local government.
The hunting lodge was a place where nobility exercised power and leisure in the landscape. It reveals how the German upper classes viewed nature and recreation in their time.
The building was dismantled from its original location and reconstructed in Altbach, where it functioned as the town hall through 2018. You can now see how the structure was adapted for its new civic role in the town.
Two original ponds built in front of the hunting lodge remain visible at the site today. They show how water features were woven into the design of the royal grounds.
