Jura-Zoo, Private zoo in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, Germany
The Jura-Zoo was a private facility in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz spread across roughly 7000 square meters and housed around 300 animals from approximately 80 different species. Visitors could observe spotted owls, cockatoos, lynx, and various other animals throughout the grounds.
The facility was founded in 1989 by Fritz Pelech and developed under his management into an established place for viewing animals. After Pelech's death in 2007, his family continued running the zoo.
The zoo was known for its involvement in breeding programs for endangered species and worked with zoos around the world to protect rare animals. Visitors could see these conservation efforts in action.
The zoo operated on different visiting hours depending on the season: during colder months from Tuesday to Sunday with shorter hours, and daily during warmer months with extended hours. This allowed visitors to plan their trips based on the weather and their own schedules.
The grounds featured an attached restaurant that served refreshments while generating income specifically for animal care and maintenance. This combination of dining and animal welfare support was a practical feature of the place.
