Wallfahrtskirche Maria Trost

Wallfahrtskirche Maria Trost is a baroque pilgrimage church in Nesselwang that stands at 1123 meters on the northeastern slope of Alpspitz mountain. The building sits within a forest clearing and features a large central ceiling fresco with the Queen of Heaven.

The church originated after 1633 when a painting of the Virgin Mary survived a fire in the Grimming baronial chapel. This event led to the founding of a pilgrimage site that drew visitors from surrounding areas.

The church displays votive paintings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries that show personal prayers and requests left by visitors seeking help and healing. These images tell stories of hope and faith that people brought to this place long ago.

Reaching the church requires a walk from the valley below, so visitors should wear sturdy footwear and plan sufficient time for the journey. The path passes through forest and meadows, and it is wise to prepare for steep terrain.

The central ceiling fresco shows the Queen of Heaven standing on a globe and surrounded by angels representing the four continents. This rare motif connects religious devotion with an early representation of the known world at that time.
