Limestone Quarry Rüdersdorf

The limestone quarry near Rüdersdorf spreads across a large area east of Berlin and reveals different rock layers from the Triassic era. Visitors can see various marine fossils and understand how stone was extracted from the earth in earlier times.

Limestone mining at this location started about 800 years ago and became the main source of building material for the region. Over the centuries, extraction methods changed, but the site remained a central supplier for construction projects in Brandenburg and Berlin.

The open-air museum displays how people extracted and processed limestone here in the 19th century. The old furnaces and machines visible on site tell the story of miners' hard work.

Visitors can join guided tours through the quarry to examine fossils, rock formations, and mining processes. It is advisable to wear sturdy shoes and prepare for uneven ground, as the tours involve walking over stone and rough surfaces.

The quarry contains the only shell limestone outcrop in Germany east of the Elbe River and displays glacial scratches that prove freezing conditions occurred here during the ice age. These features make the site valuable evidence of Germany's ice age history.
