Limestone Quarry Rüdersdorf

The quarry extends across a substantial area east of Berlin, revealing distinct geological layers of shell limestone formed during the Middle Triassic period.

Mining operations at this site began 800 years ago, making it a crucial source of limestone for construction projects throughout Brandenburg and Berlin.

The on-site open-air museum presents exhibits about mining techniques, featuring preserved 19th-century furnaces and industrial equipment that demonstrate limestone processing methods.

The site contains the only shell limestone outcrop found in Germany east of the Elbe River and houses glacial striae that prove inland freezing south of the Baltic Sea.
