Societaetstheater

Societaetstheater is a chamber theater located in Innere Neustadt with multiple performance spaces on different levels. The building contains a main stage, cellar stage, foyer, and garden area that create distinct spaces for various types of productions.

The building was founded in 1776 by nobility and middle-class citizens as an amateur theater and continues this tradition of independence. It closed in 1832 but reopened in 1999 following major restoration work.

The theater hosts spoken performances, dance shows, and music concerts from regional and international artists. Shows take place in different spaces throughout the building, attracting audiences who enjoy independent and experimental work.

The theater occupies a multi-level building, so plan time to explore its different spaces and find your way around. Shows run throughout the year except during maintenance breaks between programs.

The original baroque building from the 18th century was updated with modern technical equipment during restoration without losing its historical character. This blend of old and new allows contemporary productions to take place in a heritage-protected setting.
