Landkreis Frankenthal, Administrative district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
Landkreis Frankenthal was an administrative district in northeastern Palatinate covering approximately 233 square kilometers. The territory bordered the city of Worms and the district of Bergstrasse in Hesse and included 37 municipalities plus the city of Frankenthal.
The district formed in 1818 as Landkommissariat Frankenthal through the merger of Frankenthal and Grunstadt cantons within the Kingdom of Bavaria. It later developed into an independent district under Bavarian administrative structure.
The city of Frankenthal served as the administrative hub while maintaining its independent status from the surrounding district since 1920. This separation created a distinct local identity between the city and the surrounding municipalities.
The district no longer exists as an administrative unit after its dissolution in 1969. Visitors interested in learning about this former administrative region can explore the city of Frankenthal and the municipalities that once formed part of it.
The vehicle registration code FT, introduced in 1956, continues to be used by the city of Frankenthal today. This historical code connects the modern city to its former administrative past.
