Schloss Goseck, Medieval castle in Goseck, Germany
Schloss Goseck is a castle complex in Goseck with preserved sections of a former monastic building containing elements such as a transept, choir, and crypt from the 11th century. The structure now houses exhibitions on regional history and is managed today by the Cultural Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt.
The site was first recorded in 881 as Gozzesburg and developed from a fortification into a Benedictine monastery founded in 1041 under the direction of Frederick of Goseck. In 1609 the complex underwent a Renaissance redesign by Bernhard von Polnitz that shaped its current appearance.
The castle hosts regular concerts featuring early music and jazz that visitors can experience in its interior spaces. These events connect the medieval structure with contemporary cultural life and turn the site into a living gathering place.
Visitors can explore the building through guided tours that focus on medieval architecture and monastic life. Information about opening hours and current events should be checked before visiting, as they vary seasonally.
A special feature is the underground crypt from the 11th century that remained preserved beneath the later renovations and visitors can experience directly today. These chambers offer an immediate impression of the original monastic building before the Renaissance remodeling changed the surfaces above.
