Schloss Goseck, Medieval castle in Goseck, Germany
Schloss Goseck is a castle and former monastic complex in the town of Goseck, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, with surviving sections of a Romanesque church that include a transept, choir, and crypt dating from the 11th century. The complex is managed by the Cultural Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt and houses exhibitions on regional history.
The site was first recorded in 881 under the name Gozzesburg and grew from a fortification into a Benedictine monastery founded in 1041 under Frederick of Goseck. In 1609, Bernhard von Polnitz oversaw a Renaissance redesign that gave the complex much of the appearance it has today.
Schloss Goseck regularly hosts concerts featuring early music and jazz held inside its historic rooms. These events give visitors a chance to experience the building as a living venue rather than just a monument.
The site is best explored through a guided tour focused on medieval architecture and monastic life. Opening hours and events change with the season, so checking ahead of your visit is a good idea.
The 11th-century crypt survived beneath the later Renaissance remodeling and can be visited directly by anyone entering the complex. This underground space gives a clear sense of what the original Benedictine building looked like before the 17th-century work changed the floors above.
