Castra of Böhming, Ancient Roman military fort in Bavaria, Germany.

Castra of Böhming is a Roman military fort located in Bavaria on elevated ground between the Altmühl valley and Pfünzer Bach stream. The site displays the characteristic V-shaped ditches and rampart structures that were carved directly into the bedrock.

The fort was established around 90 CE and functioned until approximately 230-240 CE as a crucial element of Rome's Raetian frontier defense system. After its abandonment, the remaining structures continued to shape the region's character for centuries.

The site takes its name from a nearby settlement and remains a focus for archaeologists studying how Roman garrisons organized their daily routines. Visitors can observe traces of communal spaces and residential areas that reveal how soldiers spent their time off duty.

The remains sit on open ground and are accessible year-round without formal restrictions. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially during wet seasons.

The Romans did not simply dig the ditches here but blasted and chiseled them with striking precision directly into the solid rock. This technique was advanced for its time and demonstrates the extraordinary effort Rome invested in frontier security.
