Castra of Halheim

Castra of Halheim is an ancient Roman fort near Ellwangen with visible earthen ramparts and foundation remains. The site shows the rectangular layout typical of Roman military camps designed for rapid construction and defense.

The fort was built in the 2nd century as part of the Raetian Limes defensive system. It was eventually abandoned, though its structural remains survived beneath the soil for centuries.

Archaeological excavations at the Castra of Halheim have revealed numerous artifacts that demonstrate the daily routines of Roman soldiers stationed at this border post.

The site sits in an open field with informational panels explaining the fort's layout. Parking is available nearby, and walking paths allow visitors to circle the ramparts and examine the terrain from different angles.

The fort was deliberately positioned on elevated ground to command views over the surrounding landscape. This choice reveals how Romans adapted their defensive strategies to natural terrain features.
