Schloss Klingenberg

Schloss Klingenberg is a three-story Renaissance castle built from sandstone with a hipped roof and four wings surrounding a central courtyard. The building incorporates sections of the old city walls, showing how the castle was woven into the town's defensive structures.

The castle was built between 1558 and 1560 under the direction of Johann Leonhard Kottwitz von Aulenbach and has shaped the town ever since. The Freiherren von Mairhofen family later took ownership and held it through the end of the 1600s.

The chapel inside served as a daily place of prayer for residents and shows how faith and family life were intertwined in Renaissance homes. Visitors can see how it sits above the main staircase, reflecting the private spiritual world of the noble family.

The castle grounds have parking available for drivers and sit close to the town center, which is easy to reach by public transit. The site is walkable and accessible for exploring the outdoor areas at your own pace.

A sandstone fountain from 1576 still stands in the castle courtyard and remains functional, showcasing Renaissance craftsmanship. The grounds have been transformed into the town's public rose garden, giving visitors a peaceful place to stroll.
