Kainspring, Natural spring in Mühlhausen, Germany
Kainspring is a natural spring at the eastern edge of the Hainich mountains near Mühlhausen, emerging from a karst formation. The water pool measures around 30 meters across and reaches approximately 12 meters deep.
The spring was first documented in 1367 and sits near a memorial marking where Kogen village once stood. That settlement existed from the 10th century until the late 15th century before disappearing from the area.
The name comes from a local story about a boy named Kain who found this water source by chance. This tale remains part of how locals connect to the landscape and its history.
The water stays cool and constant year-round, flowing steadily into a nearby stream. The site is easy to reach on foot and offers room to walk around and explore the surrounding area.
A smaller sister spring to the north is part of a vast underground water system that spreads through the area. This hidden network connects multiple springs and eventually feeds a major river of the region.
