Stadtteilschule Bahrenfeld, Cultural heritage monument and school in Altona, Germany
Stadtteilschule Bahrenfeld is a public school in Altona's Bahrenfeld district serving students from grade one through grade ten. The institution employs around 100 teachers and works with approximately 1000 students organized into five to six parallel classes per grade level.
The school was founded in 1667 as a village school and relocated to Bahrenfelder Marktplatz in 1790. The current building dates to 1880 when architect Hansen designed it with contemporary construction methods.
The school renamed itself after Esther Bejarano in October 2023, honoring a Holocaust survivor who devoted herself to education and advocacy. This name now shapes how the school community sees itself and brings this history alive for students every day.
The school building on Regerstrasse is easily accessible by public transportation and situated in an established residential neighborhood. Keep in mind that this is an active school facility, so visiting or touring the grounds requires prior arrangement.
The 1880 main building was constructed by architect Hansen using galvanized steel elements, a cutting-edge technique for the time. This construction approach made it an early example of modern materials in school architecture.
