Castellum of Heidenstock, Roman archaeological site in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany.
The Castellum of Heidenstock is a Roman military outpost in present-day Bad Homburg vor der Höhe with preserved foundations and a former gate structure. The base walls are still visible and give an impression of how the fortified installation was once laid out.
The fort was built in the 2nd century AD and formed part of the Upper German-Raetian Limes. It marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire against Germanic peoples.
The ruins show how soldiers lived and worked at the edge of the Roman Empire. You can picture daily life in a small military outpost from what remains here.
The site is relatively easy to reach and has informative panels on location. The ruins lie in the open and can be visited year-round.
Excavations have provided evidence that a small garrison here monitored regional trade routes. These findings show the outpost served both military and economic purposes.
