Kellerskopf, Mountain summit in Taunus range, Germany
Kellerskopf is a forested summit in the Taunus range in Hesse, rising to around 474 meters and covered almost entirely by mixed woodland. Several marked hiking trails lead through the trees to the top, where a viewing area and a mountain restaurant sit side by side.
During the Middle Ages the summit served as a geographic landmark for travelers moving along the routes between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Over time the top was developed for leisure, and a mountain restaurant became a fixture at the peak.
The Kellerskopf is a popular weekend destination for families and hikers from Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, who come here to walk and stop for a meal. The restaurant at the top brings people together after a walk through the forest, making it a social spot rather than just a scenic one.
The summit can be reached from several starting points, including Naurod-Erbsenacker, where well-marked paths begin. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the forest paths can be wet or slippery depending on the season.
On clear days the viewing point at the top offers a simultaneous look at the Frankfurt skyline and the Rhine Plain, two very different landscapes that turn out to lie surprisingly close to each other. This puts the summit in an unusual position as a natural border between city and open country.
