Kloster Brenkhausen, Cistercian monastery in Höxter, Germany
Kloster Brenkhausen is a Cistercian monastery near Höxter with three baroque wings built in the early 1700s surrounding a central courtyard. A church stands at the center of the complex and now serves the Coptic Orthodox community.
The monastery was founded in 1245 as a Cistercian convent and suffered heavy damage during the Thirty Years' War. The baroque buildings were constructed afterward between 1710 and 1746 as part of the reconstruction.
The Coptic Orthodox Church took over the monastery in 1993 and created a center for Egyptian Christian traditions. Visitors can observe eastern liturgical practices and icon arrangements that differ noticeably from western church spaces.
The grounds are open to visitors and feature a Bible museum along with a restaurant located within the monastery. Visitors should know that religious services are held in the Coptic language, which offers a unique experience.
The monastery houses a collection of church models that offer visitors insight into different architectural styles. This collection demonstrates the artistic and craft traditions of sacred architecture.
