Tonenburg, Medieval castle in Albaxen, Germany.
Tonenburg is a medieval castle set on a hill near Albaxen in Germany, overlooking the Weser valley and built with defensive towers and thick stone walls. The building now operates as a guest accommodation and event venue, with its historic rooms and courtyard still in place.
The castle was founded in 1315 by Abbot Ruprecht von Horhausen to defend the lands of the Benedictine abbey of Corvey against hostile nobles. Over the centuries, ownership and use changed several times before the building was eventually converted into a guesthouse.
The Tonenburg sits in the Weser Uplands and today serves as a venue for concerts and cultural evenings held in its rooms or outdoors in the courtyard. The combination of old stonework and live events draws visitors from across the region.
The castle sits on elevated ground and is reached by paths with uneven terrain and stone steps, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Those who want to stay overnight or attend an event should check directly with the operator in advance.
Inside the courtyard there is a 14th-century well that goes more than 60 feet (18 meters) down into the rock. It shows how the castle's residents once met their daily need for water and remains intact to this day.
