Kloster Caldern, Cistercian monastery in Caldern, Germany
The Kloster Caldern complex includes several buildings with a main chapel, residential quarters, and areas designated for communal activities within stone walls.
Founded in 1238, the monastery received the Nikolai Chapel from Landgravine Sophie of Thuringia, which became the central place of worship for the community.
The monastery maintained a textile manufacturing facility where nuns produced linen and wool fabrics until 1525, when production became limited to internal needs.
The monastery grounds contain preserved sections of the original walls, the monastery church, and a newly designed monastery garden called Gate to Paradise.
The monastery's territory expanded through strategic acquisitions between 1250 and 1350, focusing on self-sufficiency with fields, gardens, stables, forests, and multiple mills.
