Burg Eckelskirche, Medieval hill castle in Sterzhausen, Germany.

Burg Eckelskirche is a medieval hill castle ruin located on Wollenberg mountain in Sterzhausen at approximately 474 meters elevation. The site displays remnants of circular fortifications with diameters around 100 meters and visible ditches that illustrate the former scale of the fortified settlement.

The fortress originated during the Ottonian period at the end of the Early Middle Ages, reflecting the strategic importance of this elevated location. In later times, stones from the declining structure were repurposed for construction projects, including the Michelbacher Martin Church.

A stone mound in the northeast section contains two large slabs that researchers believe may have served as ancient ritual or gathering places. These distinctive stones suggest the site held spiritual or ceremonial importance for those who once gathered here.

The ruins sit on elevated terrain, so sturdy footwear and sure footing are advisable, especially when the ground is damp. The approach is not paved, and signage is minimal, so plan to spend time exploring the site at your own pace.

A stone mound in the northeast displays remarkably well-preserved stone plates, suggesting this location was used longer than most similar fortifications. The presence of these sturdy stone structures hints at specialized craftsmanship or ceremonial effort that is rarely documented elsewhere.
