Amoenau Castle

Amoenau Castle is a manor estate in Wetter, Hessen, featuring a distinctive half-timbered structure with approximately fifty rooms throughout the building. A garden pavilion and a notable tower called Rapunzelturm are key architectural elements of the property.

King Heinrich II granted this land to Stephanstift of Mainz in 1008, establishing an early religious connection. The stone structure that stands today was built by the Lords of Hohenfels in the 15th century.

The tower here became known as Rapunzelturm after an illustrator drew it in 1909 and connected it to the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. This link to classic stories has shaped how visitors understand and experience the place today.

The estate sits on elevated ground surrounded by streams and channels, which may affect access routes and movement around the property. Restoration work is ongoing to maintain and preserve the historical structure for visitors.

The property is encircled by three waterways: the Asphe river, the Treisbach stream, and a mill channel, reflecting medieval thinking about defense. This watery setting was a deliberate strategic choice in how the land was originally developed.
