Cismar Abbey, Benedictine abbey in Grömitz, Germany

Located in the village of Cismar, this abbey stands as a substantial brick Gothic structure with intricate architectural elements and a carved altar from the 14th century.

The monastery was established in 1238 by Count Adolf IV of Holstein to accommodate Benedictine monks from Lübeck who needed a new residence.

The monastery library contained numerous manuscripts and texts, which are now preserved in the Royal Library of Copenhagen for research and documentation.

The abbey functions as a museum with exhibits about monastic life, and visitors can access all areas through wheelchair-friendly pathways throughout the complex.

During its active period, the abbey attracted numerous pilgrims due to its claimed possession of Christ's blood and a healing spring dedicated to John the Baptist.
