Kloster Herrenchiemsee, Augustinian monastery on Herreninsel, Chiemsee, Germany
Kloster Herrenchiemsee is an Augustinian monastery on Herreninsel island in Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. The complex consists of four Baroque buildings arranged around a rectangular courtyard with a rose garden in the center.
The monastery was founded between 1125 and 1129 and served as a home for an Augustinian community for many centuries. In 1803 it was dissolved during the secularization period and the buildings later changed hands several times.
The church displays Baroque artistic forms that reflect the faith and skill of the Augustinian monks. Visitors can see these works in the spaces where monks lived and prayed for centuries.
The former monastery grounds can only be visited through guided tours that run regularly throughout the day. It helps to check ahead for tour times to plan your visit properly.
In 1948 German representatives gathered on the grounds to draft the Basic Law that formed the foundation of modern German democracy. This historic moment connects the monastery directly to the rebuilding of a nation after World War Two.
