Kloster, Cistercian monastery in Würzburg, Germany.
Kloster is a Benedictine nuns' monastery in Würzburg, combining early Gothic architecture with Renaissance details around a church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The complex groups a church, a cloister, and residential buildings that have kept their medieval layout to this day.
The monastery was founded in 1231 and moved to its current location outside the city walls in 1250 following papal authorization. That move gave the community a more withdrawn setting away from the town.
The monastery belongs to an order that welcomed women from all walks of life and gave them real leadership roles within the community. Visitors today can sense this continuity as an active religious community still lives and works on the grounds.
The monastery is within walking distance of Würzburg's city center and easy to reach on foot. Since the building is still in active use, it is best to visit outside of prayer times to avoid disturbing the community.
On the monastery grounds, nuns run a candle workshop where they make and sell candles using traditional methods. This craft is still part of daily life there and helps the community support itself through skilled handwork.
