Kloster, Cistercian monastery in Würzburg, Germany.
The monastery features early Gothic architecture with Renaissance modifications, including a long church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary into Heaven.
Founded in 1231 by Bishop Hermann von Lobdeburg, the monastery moved to its current location outside Würzburg's city walls in 1250 after papal approval.
The monastery broke social barriers by allowing non-noble women to join the order and reach the position of abbess during medieval times.
The Carmelite nuns maintain daily routines starting at 5:30 AM with prayers and operate a candle workshop within the monastery grounds.
This monastery remains the only medieval women's convent in Würzburg that preserved its original structural layout into modern times.
