Koeth-Wanscheidsches Schloss, Baroque château in Dirmstein, Germany
The Koeth-Wanscheidsches Schloss is a baroque manor house in Dirmstein featuring a central building flanked by two lower side wings that frame a front courtyard. The structure displays typical late baroque architectural qualities with balanced proportions and formal arrangement.
The castle was built between 1715 and 1718 following the destruction of earlier structures during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689. This new construction marked the restoration of authority in the region and a return to stability after years of devastation.
The castle served as a residence for noble families and continues to shape the village character of Dirmstein today. Its baroque design with symmetrical proportions reflects the importance these former inhabitants held in the region.
The property now houses a psychosomatic medical clinic and is not open to the public for tours. The exterior and gardens can be viewed from outside, though access to the grounds themselves is restricted.
The castle grounds feature an English garden laid out in the early 19th century by Johann Metzger, Heidelberg's court gardener, for the von Camuzi family. This landscaped garden with its natural forms creates an interesting contrast to the formal baroque architecture of the main building.
