Kuhsee, Reservoir in Hochzoll district, Augsburg, Germany
Kuhsee is a 17-hectare artificial lake in the eastern part of Augsburg, fed by groundwater and reaching depths between 3 and 16 feet (1 to 5 meters). Trees and open meadows surround the water on all sides.
The water body formed between 1970 and 1972 through gravel extraction following a flood protection project. Before that, an old arm of the Lech river ran here until severe flooding prompted drainage works.
Local families from Augsburg spend weekends on the grassy shores, swimming and picnicking where cattle once came to drink from the old river arm. Children play in the shallow water while parents relax under the trees nearby.
Parking areas sit directly at the shore, where kiosks and a restaurant offer refreshments throughout the day. Changing rooms and restrooms are available at several points around the lawns.
The neighboring Kuhseeheide nature reserve has been protected since 1951 and shelters several threatened plant species. Visitors can walk along narrow paths through this area without stepping onto the protected grounds.
