Untere Burg, Medieval water castle in Kuchenheim, Germany.
Untere Burg is a medieval water castle in Kuchenheim with remains that consist of two separate sections. A gatehouse from 1573 and the former manor house are now separated by a road that runs alongside the Erftmühlenbach stream.
The estate was first documented in 1482 as a fief under Cologne church rule and originally occupied two islands. The original residential tower was built from unworked stone as a defensive structure.
The structures here reflect how local nobility once protected their homes and organized their living spaces. The buildings show the building standards that were important to residents of the region.
The site is freely accessible and visitors can view the remains from the roadside. Both sections of the site can be examined without special equipment or guided tours.
The structure originally spanned two separate islands in the stream, making it an unusual defensive arrangement. This island layout allowed different functions to be kept apart and added an extra layer of protection.
