Poensgen Park, Landscaped gardens in Ratingen Mitte, Germany
Poensgen Park is a 4.5-hectare green space in Ratingen comprising distinct sections with open meadows, scattered trees, and wooded areas along the Anger stream. The grounds contain more than 120 tree species and retain remnants of historical structures on the property.
Johann Gottfried Brügelmann established the initial garden in 1790, which Reinhold Hoemann later redesigned in 1907 after Carl Poensgen acquired the property. This redesign reflected contemporary garden reform ideas that still shape the site today.
The park reflects early 1900s garden design principles through its layout of distinct zones and remaining structures. Today visitors can observe how this approach balanced open spaces with planted areas and built elements.
The park is accessible via a network of walking paths that remain open throughout the year. Visitors should be prepared for varying ground conditions depending on the season and wear appropriate footwear.
A millstone on the grounds was placed by Walter Rohland to commemorate his international travels during the 1955 restoration period. This marker blends personal history with the park's modern development.
