Kevernburg

Kevernburg is a castle complex on a hilltop near Arnstadt with preserved stone walls and foundations. The remains show the ground plans of residential buildings, defensive structures, and other medieval constructions.

The complex was built around 1100 as the seat of the Counts of Kevernburg. After this noble family died out in 1385, the site lost its role as a center of power.

The location takes its name from the family who lived here during the medieval period and shaped its identity. Today, visitors can see the stone remains that show how this noble family made their home on the hilltop.

The ruins are reachable by marked hiking trails from Arnstadt through the surrounding forest. The climb to the hilltop is quite natural, though it does require some physical effort.

A deep well shaft system beneath the walls shows how residents made water available at this height. Such sources were essential for people living high on the hilltop.
