Krankenhaus Lehe, Protected monument in Bremerhaven, Germany
Krankenhaus Lehe is a protected monument in Bremerhaven featuring a three-story structure with numerous projections and recesses designed for natural light and ventilation. The complex includes the main hospital building alongside a mortuary section with its own architectural character.
This complex opened on September 1, 1906, to address inadequate healthcare in the Lehe district of Bremerhaven. After operating as a hospital for about 70 years, it closed in 1976 and transitioned to a new purpose.
The main building displays neogothic style with elaborate brickwork and stepped gables typical of early twentieth-century German design. These architectural details still shape how visitors perceive the site today.
The site is located at Wurster Straße 49 and now houses offices for the local health department. Keep in mind that it functions primarily as a workplace, so access may be limited for visitors.
The mortuary section preserves rose windows and specialized architectural details distinct from the main building. This area reflects a design made specifically for its original medical purpose.
