The castle features a horseshoe-shaped structure with robust round towers on the eastern wing and a southern wing from the 15th century.
Built by the Falkenstein family in the 14th century, the castle changed ownership multiple times before becoming a residence for Landgrave Philip III of Hesse-Butzbach.
The castle contained an observatory in its attic where astronomer Johannes Kepler conducted research during two separate visits in the early 17th century.
The castle now serves as Butzbach's town hall, following extensive renovations completed in 2002 that preserved its historical architecture.
Archaeological excavations during renovations revealed 17th-century wall paintings in the southern wing, indicating the building's artistic heritage.
