Solms Castle in Butzbach

Solms Castle is a two-story rectangular building with a four-story round tower located within Butzbach's medieval city fortifications. The structure blends late Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements throughout its design.

The castle was built between 1479 and 1481 as part of the city's defensive structures. Over the following centuries it served multiple purposes before becoming a local courthouse from 1879 until 2004.

The entrance staircase displays inscriptions from a Renaissance humanist scholar. These carved details reflect the intellectual interests that shaped how the space was designed and used during that era.

The building underwent major renovation work from 2009 to 2012 and now features modern climate control systems. Access is through the city wall area, so visitors should expect narrow medieval pathways around the fortifications.

The castle received the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in 2017 for its exemplary restoration methods. This award recognized the skilled craftsmanship used during modernization while preserving the building's original character.
